Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
New research indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying these treatments must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.
The struggle is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
